Sappi’s wide-spread plantations, coupled with the vision and dedication of passionate local mountain biking enthusiasts, have resulted in a world-class trail network which is now accessible to recreational riders year round.

All routes start and finish at the Karkloof Country Club where additional facilities include safe parking and hot showers – everything you need to enjoy a great mountain biking experience! There are plans to introduce a coffee shop and restaurant which will be open Friday night, Saturday breakfast/lunch/supper and Sunday breakfast/lunch.

In an effort to make the area safer and more enjoyable for recreational riders, the Karkloof Mountain Biking Club has implemented the International Mountain Biking Association trail-grading standards across the entire trail network. There are marked and mapped routes ranging from a very easy 10 kilometres and an easy 20 kilometres to a moderately challenging 30-kilometre route.

Once riders become more familiar with the trails, they are then also able to connect to other sections, referred to as outback trails, which do not form part of the marked and regularly maintained trails, but allow riders to create longer routes and enjoy more variety.

In March 2008, proprietor Anthony Rawbone-Viljoen was proud to announce the launch of The Oak Valley Mountain Biking Experience.

Established by Pieter Visser, previously the Oak Valley winemaker, who himself was a keen mountain biker, the trails start and finish in the oak-lined avenues at the entrance of the Estate.

There are 3 marked routes: a 14 kilometre Blue Route for the family; a 24 kilometre Red Route for stronger riders; and the 32 kilometre Black Route for more advanced riders.

The trails consist of a large percentage of well-maintained singletrack, with bridges over farm fences and streams, making for a highly enjoyable ride.

The biking trail takes the rider through beautiful natural scenery, including forests of ancient oak trees, through vineyards, through apple and pear orchards and across sub-clover/grass pastures, set against the stunning backdrop of the protected fynbos on the slopes of the Groenlandberg Mountain. Due to the mix of terrain we recommend you use a good all round tyre. The fee is R40 per rider, payable at the security office located at the entrance gate to the Estate. The trail has been described by expert mountain bikers as the best of its kind in the Western Cape - a 5 star experience!

After your ride, visit The Pool Room Restaurant, Deli and Wine Tasting venue located 500 metres from the start of the trails. The Pool Room is open for breakfast & lunch from Tuesday to Sunday and dinner on Fridays & Saturdays. The wine tasting bar is situated at The Pool Room and is open 7 days a week, Monday to Sunday, including public holidays.

Have fun and enjoy Oak Valley's MTB Experience!

Having launched in January 2015, the bike park at Constantia Uitsig is being updated constantly, and will ultimately consist of a meandering cross-country track stretching over 3.5 km, amidst indigenous vegetation and the scenic beauty of Constantia.

In addition, there is now also a dual slalom race track and a Bike Barn – offering spectators a cozy hideout and cyclists, a pitstop with bike repair facilities on site.

Designed by Downhill World Champion, Chris Nixon, the tracks are ideal for honing one’s bike handling skills. BMX’s, mountain bikes and cyclocross are all welcome.

TokaiMTB is a constituted representative body and publicly funded non-profit organization. The group subscribes to the guiding best practices of the International Mountain Bike Association (IMBA) through the African IMBA representative body and non-profit company, Amarider.

As one of the founding members of the Table Mountain Mountain Bike forum, our mandate is to assist SANParks with mountain bike activity management in the Table Mountain National Park to help provide the recreational users with a safe and well-managed mountain bike trail facility.

Members of TokaiMTB have been active in a voluntary capacity since the official introduction of mountain biking on this mountain since 1995. The group is in possession of a SANParks permit to upgrade and maintain mountain bike trails within the Table Mountain National Park, as well as host monthly community volunteer programmes in Tokai. We operate from Tokai which is located in the central section of this National Park.

TokaiMTB is constantly expanding into other areas where SANParks requires assistance and believes firmly that a good working relationship is vital to the well-being of both the environment and user recreational needs.

The UCI Mountain Bike World Cup is a multi-round mountain bike racing series that is sanctioned by the Union Cycliste Internationale. The first World Cup series – which was composed of cross-country events – was held in 1989. The Downhill World Cup was inaugurated two years later, and the Dual Slalom World Cup was launched in 1998. The dual-slalom format – which involved knock-out heats with two riders on the parallel courses in each heat – evolved into four-cross (with four riders on a single course per heat) in 2002 before being dropped after the 2011 season. Riders win points according to their placing in each event. The reigning series leaders in each class are identified by a special jersey. The UCI Mountain Bike World Cup is broadcast live and globally on Red Bull TV.

We are very proud to share our fantastic MTB, Trail running and Hiking facilities with you. The 80km of farm trails with about 8km of single track, incorporates all that a Mountain biker, Trail runner and hiker enthusiast demands. A magnificent setting surrounded by beautiful scenery, undulating and flowing track, which we hope will be a pleasure for you to ride and walk. It is safe and fully marked and is designed in such a way to accommodate all ages and fitness levels.

We have tried to make it fast and free flowing with a few technical sections along the way. You will ride over all types of surfaces but in general it will be smooth. The hills are user friendly and enjoyable for the average rider. There are a number of route options and shortcuts and this allows you to choose your distance and route for the day.

Steaming hot showers and changing facilities are available. A small coffee shop which operates on an honesty system has hot and cold refreshments along with some sweets and energy bars for you to enjoy whilst you relax after a nice hot shower in our very relaxed “chill area”.
