Bains Mountain Bike Trails @ Welvanpas

Come and experience the beauty you never knew existed in the Western Cape before! The trail is challenging, but rewarding. Stop at the top of the climbs to absorb it all. The reward for your effort is fast, technical single track with breathtaking views!

ROUTE OVERVIEW

The route starts and ends at Welvanpas farm which is nestled between the beautiful Hawekwa and Groenberg mountain ranges. It is mainly single track and winds through orchard, vineyard, waterfalls and pristine fynbos.

It takes you up high unto Groenberg, before a descending steep, technical section down to the Kromme River. Here you can choose the challenging, very steep finish towards the river or an (equally) challenging chicken run. Hereafter it runs on the banks of the tranquil stream through a natural forest. The second part of the route takes you towards Bainskloof Pass, up a thigh-testing single track climb and finally back towards Welvanpas Farm, on single track carved into the steep slopes of the Bainskloof foothills.

The Grindrod Bank Berg & Bush takes mountain bikers from the top of the Drakensberg escarpment near Harrismith and drops down into Kwazulu-Natal negotiating world-famous single track into the bushveld below into Winterton. We have three events to choose from, the Descent & Great Trek are three day events and the 2 day Original is 2 days of riding.

Riders camp along the shady banks of the Tugela river at the famous Em'Seni Camp ready to tackle the next two days of spectacular bushveld riding. With farm-style hospitality and an area rich in history, not to mention incredible riding, you're sure to have a proper adventure on your bike!

MOUNTAIN BIKING ON BOSCHENDAL 

Boschendal proudly hosted the Cape Epic 2016 for 2 days and we have recently opened the new Boschendal MTB Trails to the riding public. With single track by Bennett Nel,  Pieter van Wyk and Shaun Havenga expect some sweet riding. The world class black route is proving to be a hit with intermediate to advanced riders, but we do have routes to suit families and casual riders.

Downhill single track includes Inferno (3.7 km), Sugar Bowl (2.3km), and Porcupine (1.3km). The 1km Orchards skills track with its sweeping berms, camel backs, table tops and gap jumps has both beginner and advanced options.

Trails: 5 marked trail circuits starting just inside the Rhodes Avenue security gate. 4km Yellow Route; 9km Green Route; 11km Blue Route; 15km Red Route; 23km Black Route. The Black XL route adds 3-4 sections onto Black route.

Parking: Riders can park at the main parking area at Boschendal Werf. From here it is a short 1km ride the trail start on the other side of the R310.

Daily rate: R50 per rider per day

Annual rate: R500 for 1 / R800 for a couple / R1000 for a family. Permits valid for 12 months from the date of purchase. Please bring an ID photo when applying for an annual permit. An annual permit will take 1 week to process but riders can ride for free on the day they apply and pay for an annual permit.

Permits & maps: Permits are available from the Boschendal Trail Centre. 100% of the permit fee goes towards building and maintaining trails. Please note that permits will be checked by security at Rhodes Avenue gate. No permit no ride.

Opening hours: Open 365 days. Monday-Friday 08:00-17:00 and Saturday-Sunday 08:00-15:00. Day permits available from 8am Monday to Sunday.

Bike hire: Trek Marlin 7 mountain bikes for hire at R400 per day. Contact [email protected] or telephone 0210019401 to make a reservation. Bikes and permits can be collected from the Boschendal Trail Centre.

Family friendly: Family friendly facilities and things to do at the Boschendal werf for those not riding. Things to do after your ride: Have breakfast at the Deli, enjoy a long lunch at the Deli or Werf Restaurant, have a picnic on the lawns, enjoy wine tasting under the oaks, swop your iron steed for a horse or pony ride, visit the natural meat Werf Butchery, check out the vast gardens, and stock up on some fresh farm produce at the Farmshop.

Amenities: Shower facilities and secure parking available.

Buffelsdrift Mountain Bike Park is located only 15km North of Pretoria and provides a safe and secure riding environment within the confines of the Buffelsdrift Nature Conservancy. Lying on the western boundaries of the Dinokeng area, between the Roodeplaat Dam and the N1 highway, Buffelsdrift Conservancy has become a fairly popular place to visit not only because it is so easy to reach, so close to both Pretoria and Johannesburg, but also as a superb birding spot.  This is due in no small part to the proximity of the Roodeplaat dam, from which an extensive canal system runs, and the Pienaars River that runs through the conservancy attracting birds for most of the year.

Our bike park has been used to showcase the natural beauty the bushveld has to offer and the wildlife that can be viewed while riding is some of the most breathtaking in the world.  We have Kudu, Zebra, Impala and even the tempestuous Warthog or Bush Pig.  They have an appeal that no one can quite explain.

Cascades MTB park is the home of Mountain biking in KZN. Cascades has been host to the 2009, 2011 and 2012 World-cups. Cascades has a number of XCO, XCE and Downhill trails. The public are free to use these trails at no charge.

A bit of history…Clearwater has been a working farm since 1979.  The Abbott’s established the cabins later in the year 1996 with the intention of exposing the beautiful Umtamvuna Nature Reserve & River Gorge to the visitor. Thereafter, over the following 20 years, the next generation developed the interest of the walking and mountain biking trails on the farm.  The gorge view deck has also become a well frequented “to-do” item in the area. 

The Routes are designed to exhilarate the mountain biker by design though are quite well suited for the avid trail runner and nature walker. 

Clearwater Trails boasts a marvellous mix of terrain and scenic views along four custom-built and well-marked MTB trails. Jan ‘The Man’ Abbott went all out when he designed the routes, making sure there would be something to suit all levels and types of mountain bikers.

An exhilarating mix of hand-made single-track, jeep track and gravel road constitute a fast and riveting ride. Choose between routes along moderate gradients or attempt the more serious downhill section if, of course, you’re prepared to take on the burn as you climb back up out of the valley!

The classic view of the Umtamvuna river gorge on the start of your ride from the Gorge View Deck meets your eyes before you carry on onto the series of flowing berms, switchbacks, natural ramps, bridges and water crossings ahead.

The Blue Route (20km):This is an easy to moderate circular option along a mix of gravel roads, single-track and dual-track. This trail follows the ridge line with only a few gradual hills, but is more technical than the Green   Route.

The Green Route (4.7km):This easy circuit on farm roads and single-track is ideal for family outings and sprint rides. From the cabins, head from the gate to Gorge Viewing Deck. Follow the white rocks with green arrows to stay on route. Green bypasses are interspersed within the Blue Route to offer an alternative course or an easier option.

Mix and match your routes, providing you adhere to the general direction of the route markers, particularly on the Blue Route.

Howick Mountain Biking is a specialist Mountain Bike Club formed for those who are passionate about Mountain Biking. We are located in Howick in the Kwa-Zulu Natal Midlands of South Africa and do most of our riding in the plantations between Howick and the Karkloof. Technical singletrack is where we are at and to this end we have laid out over 45km of  singletrack, varying from gentle terrain and tree lined paths to attention grabbing sections that are aptly named Suicide Slide, The Face, Rushalot and Pines.

Howick MTB Club has numerous club activities and schedule regular club rides. Although we love singletrack, we cater for all levels of riders. We ride hard..we have fun... and we simply revel in Mountain Biking!

The Husqvarna Classic Mid-Illovo MTB Challenge & Trail Run has entrenched itself as a firm favourite on the mountain biking and trail running calendar. Part of the Quattro ROAG Series, the event comprises various races, ranging from ultra-challenging to relatively effortless – depending on fitness levels! Kilometres of new and exciting single track have been cut allowing for fast flowing track and superb views. 

This event aims to provide you the rider with some of the best value mountain biking available.

Specialist MTB organisers and logistic consultants Impi Concept Events will once again help the Eston committee and sponsors in delivering a superb event during 2018. Ideally situated between DBN and PMB, this event is a true mass participation event for all ages, sexes and riders.
